The term 'plate tectonics ' as it applies to the area of basic science can be defined as 'theory that explains the global distribution of geological phenomena such as seismicity, volcanism, continental drift, and mountain building in terms of the formation, destruction, movement, and interaction of the Earth's lithospheric plates; the theory that the earth's crust is broken into fragments (plates) which move in relation to one another, shifting continents, forming new crust, and causing volcanic eruptions'.
